How to Ask ChatGPT to Make a Meal Plan You'll Actually Follow

Short answer: give ChatGPT the number of people, your budget, your weeknight cooking time, your diet and dislikes, and what's already in your pantry. Then ask it to reuse ingredients across meals and return a grocery list grouped by aisle. "Give me healthy meals" gets you a plan for a made-up person. Constraints get you a plan for your actual week.

Why ChatGPT meal plans feel generic

Without constraints, ChatGPT picks "healthy average" meals like salmon, quinoa, and three ingredients you don't own. Every gap is a guess, and the guesses add up to a plan nobody follows.

Constraints that make a plan stick

  1. Who's eating: number of people, kids or adults.
  2. Budget: per week, with "mark prices as estimates."
  3. Time: max active minutes on weeknights (weekends can be longer).
  4. Diet + dislikes: allergies, restrictions, foods you won't eat.
  5. Pantry: what you already have.
  6. Output: a table plus a grocery list grouped by aisle.

Before and after

Before:

make me a cheap meal plan

After:

Before you start, ask me up to 5 questions, one at a time, about anything you need to know. Then: create a 7-day dinner plan for [2 adults] on [$60]/week. Diet: [no pork, partner dislikes mushrooms]. Already have: [rice, eggs, canned tomatoes, frozen peas]. Max [25] min active cooking on weeknights. Format: Day | Meal | Est. cost | Prep time. Then one grocery list grouped by aisle, plus how leftovers get reused. Constraints: Reuse ingredients across meals so nothing gets wasted. Mark prices "est."

Why it works: "ask me first" fills in the details you forgot, reusing ingredients is where the savings actually come from, and "est." keeps it honest about prices it can't know.

Variations

  • High-protein: "Target about [130g] protein/day; list protein per meal."
  • Meal prep: "I cook twice a week (Sun + Wed). Plan 2–3 base recipes that reheat well."
  • Use-it-up: "Build 3 dinners around what's going off: [spinach, half a chicken]."
  • Family: "Meals adults and kids can share, with one easy customization each."

Keep it realistic

  • Ask for 5 dinners, not 21 meals. Leftovers and takeout happen.
  • Check allergies and nutrition claims yourself. ChatGPT isn't a dietitian.
  • Next week, paste what you actually ate and ask: "Adjust next week based on this."

FAQ

Does ChatGPT remember my preferences next week? Not reliably. Save your constraints as a reusable prompt and paste it each week. Can it plan around a medical diet? It can draft one, but check it with a doctor or dietitian.
