How to Ask ChatGPT to Make a Study Guide (and Quiz You)

Short answer: paste your own notes or syllabus, tell ChatGPT the exam format and date, and ask for a study guide built only from your material. Then have it quiz you one question at a time. Answering questions helps you remember far more than rereading a summary does.

Why generic study guides don't help

A study guide on "cell biology" covers what an average course teaches, not what's on your exam. Using your own notes keeps the guide focused on what you'll actually be tested on.

The study guide prompt

Before:

make me a study guide for biology

After:

Role: You are a tutor preparing me for a [unit test] on [topic], format: [multiple choice + 2 short essays], date: [date]. Task: Build a study guide using ONLY the notes below. Format: 1) The 10 most testable concepts, ranked 2) For each: a 2-sentence explanation + one example 3) Key terms table (term | definition in my words) 4) 3 likely essay questions with bullet outlines. Constraints: If something in my notes is unclear or seems wrong, flag it instead of filling in. Notes: """[paste]"""

Why it works: the exam format shapes the guide, "only my notes" keeps it aligned with your class, and flagging unclear parts tells you what to ask your teacher.

Then: quiz mode

Quiz me on the guide above. 10 questions, one at a time. Wait for my answer. Tell me if I'm right and why in 2 sentences. At the end, list the 2 concepts I should review.

Flashcards

Turn the key terms into 20 flashcards formatted "Front ;; Back" so I can import them into a flashcard app.

A simple study plan

I have [X] days and [Y] minutes a day. Spread the 10 concepts over those days, with review sessions on days [2, 4, 7].
